How do you know that summer has arrived here in Burlington, Vermont? The last little patches of snow have finally melted, the farmer’s markets are back in full swing, and the sweet sounds of jazz start to fill the air for the annual Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. For ten harmonious days, music infiltrates the streets of Burlington – popping up along Church Street, at almost every local restaurant, and along the beautiful shores of Lake Champlain.
Get Your Jazz On
For the past 19 years, we have proudly sponsored the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. The festival’s mission is, “to broaden awareness and appreciation of jazz through quality live performances of national and regional scope; present education activities that illuminate the art for students of all ages and backgrounds; showcase Vermont and regional jazz artists, including students; and create a vital city-wide community festival that contributes to the national jazz dialogue.” What makes this event incredible is that it highlights the sounds of such a wide variety of performers. Featuring everything from world-class names, like Patti LaBelle and Bobby McFerrin, to local acts like the Anthony Santor Trio and regional high school jazz bands. (I mean, it’s not every day that world-class acts come to our tiny state, let alone perform in the same festival as a hometown ensemble.) With over 100 hours of music at more than 100 different events, including numerous free performances, this truly is an inclusive, community-wide music festival.
The Snack that Gives Back
As a certified B Corporation®, we love being able to support our local community. Every year we help raise money for the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival by donating a portion of our product sales back to the festival. In the past, we have created a limited-edition chocolate bar to celebrate this momentous festival. This year we decided to feature two products — our new milk chocolate Snack Bites and dark chocolate Snack Bites. Scrumptious morsels of organic and Fair Trade Certified™ chocolate packed with toasted quinoa crunchies. Donating the proceeds from not one but two new products with broad flavor appeal allows us to make an even bigger impact on the BDJF Artist-in-Residence Program. Plus, snackable chocolate in a re-sealable bag ready for sharing (or not) makes for an even more extraordinary eating experience while out and about enjoying live music! Between May 31st and June 9th, $2.00 from the sale of every Snack Bites bag sold online or in our three stores will be donated to the Artist-in-Residence program.
This year’s Artist-in-Residence is Tia Fuller, an acclaimed saxophonist, professor at the Berklee School of Music, and former Beyoncé band member. According to the festival organizers, “the Artist-in-Residence program invites celebrated jazz musicians to spend time in our community, participate in local music education programs, and engage with festival goers, local groups, and students of jazz. The program deepens connections beyond the stage and offers accessible events to expand jazz audiences.” Past celebrated jazz musicians have included Anat Cohen, Christian Mc Bride, Ray Vega, and more!
