We are proud to announce that we won three sofi™ Awards this year! For over 30 years, Lake Champlain Chocolates has been in pursuit of extraordinary chocolate moments. These moments come from crafting irresistibly delicious chocolates that make you pause, close your eyes, and savor each bite to the fullest. This year, our pursuit of the extraordinary led to three prestigious sofi™ Awards!
What is a sofi™ Award?
A sofi™ is the top honor in the $127 billion specialty food industry. For over 40 years, the Specialty Food Association has honored innovators and craftsmen in the specialty food industry with the “Oscars” of the food world – the Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation Awards or sofi Awards. Every sofi™ Award entry is carefully assessed by passionate and knowledgeable food professionals including chefs, culinary experts, academics, food writers, and category buyers. Products are judged on taste, ingredient quality, and innovation. 2017 was an especially competitive year with a record 3,000 entries across 39 different categories. Lake Champlain Chocolates is not new to the world of sofi™ Awards. Our Apple Cider Caramels and Five Star Bars have been former honorees.
Moka Fleck wins the Best New Product sofi™ Award
It’s amazing to think that our cacao chocolate bar started out as a limited-edition bar created to support our local Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. This unique bar features a tantalizing blend of organic 43% dark-milk chocolate, fine-ground Dominican coffee, and crunchy flecks of house-roasted cacao nibs. The flavor proved so popular that it earned a permanent place in our organic chocolate bar line. And now just four months after its debut, the bar is honored with two sofi™ Awards — the Best New Product Award and the Bronze Award in the Milk and White Chocolate category.
It’s Hot, Honey wins the Bronze sofi™ Award
When it comes to pursuing extraordinary chocolate moments, sometimes you have to think outside of the box. Enter, It’s Hot, Honey — a bar that is not for the faint of heart. This bold, spirited bar features a Vermont honey-caramel center infused with spicy habanero chili peppers and a touch of lime in organic 57% dark chocolate. This adventurous bar won the sofi Bronze Award in the Dark Chocolate category.
It’s About What’s Inside
What makes these two bars outstanding is the unique blend of ingredients. For Moka Fleck, both the coffee beans, from Vermont Coffee Company, and the house-roasted nibs, from Reserva Zorzal, a 1000-acre bird sanctuary and old growth cacao forest, hail from the Dominican Republic. The combination of fine-ground coffee with the nutty texture of the nibs creates a bar with a bold coffee flavor that is both irresistibly crunchy and undeniably smooth. To craft It’s Hot, Honey, we rely on organic, locally-sourced cream from Kimball Brook Farms and fresh, Vermont honey. The result is a pleasing balance of chocolate and spice that starts out honey-sweet, and then builds the heat to a mouth-tingling zing that keeps you coming back for more. The finishing touch for both bars — organic and fair trade certified chocolate. Because, to make the best tasting chocolates, you have to source the best ingredients possible!
