Lake Champlain Chocolates LEED Certified Facility to Receive Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont Award For Landscape Design

September 23, 2008 :: Burlington, VT – (LCC) On the same day Lake Champlain Chocolates’ plaque designating the packaging and distribution facility at 444 Pine at LEED Certified arrived, the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont awarded the same facility its Landscape Award for Business.

Endorsed and submitted for the award by the Burlington Garden Club, a non-profit organization now in its 75th year, the landscape design was created by Keith Wagner of H. Keith Wagner Partnership, Burlington with the installation being directed by Peter Norris of Greenhaven Gardens, New Haven.

“The National Garden Clubs and the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont are committed to urging gardeners and landscapers to avoid using invasive plants that pose a threat to native species.” stated Phyllis Larry, President of the Burlington Garden Club. “Lake Champlain Chocolates’ landscaping is in harmony with that initiative.”

“With the efforts in place to create an energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly facility, we felt it was important to focus on the exterior landscape design as well,” said Lake Champlain Chocolates founder Jim Lampman. “It’s a beautiful compliment to the high standards of the building and instantly pleasing to the eye for our visitors. Keith’s design made perfect sense.”

According to Keith Wagner, his design intent was “to create a playful planting that provides animation and color to the warm rich colors of the warehouse façade.” The non-invasive plant material, Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’ was chosen to “lend texture and subtle movement in a breeze while the splash of soft light green complements and embellishes the chocolate brown of the building.” The mulch is a perfectly chosen texture and shade of brown that adds to “the overall effect of a hazy softness that melds the building to the ground.” This landscaping choice exemplifies the National and Vermont Garden Clubs’ emphasis on avoiding the use of invasive plants.
